Investing in the mid-priced rental sector

Many middle-income households struggle to find affordable rental housing. The demand for housing with a rental price between €700 and €1,000 is particularly high in urban areas. In the Netherlands, these homes are referred to as ‘mid-priced rental homes’.

Over the next ten years, the Netherlands will need between 60,000 and 200,000 additional homes. The Dutch Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations is devoting special attention to this issue. Together with the provinces, municipalities, social housing associations and investors, the ministry is taking steps to facilitate an increase in affordable housing in the mid-priced rental segment.

Developing the mid-priced rental sector

Creating a non-regulated affordable rental housing sector entails more than just building new homes. It also requires smart solutions within the existing housing stock and an assurance that rental prices stay at an affordable level. This section focuses on how the mid-priced rental sector is developed in the Netherlands.
